By the age of 18, Hussain was running three children's clothing shops in Leeds, one named after his mother Zarina. He sold the shops when he was 19 and went into residential property, first renovating small terraced houses then specialising in student accommodation. By the age of 24 he had built his own £1.9m home on millionaires' row in Alwoodley, Leeds. A year later he decided to concentrate on commercial property and launched Cubic Acquisitions, a company providing serviced office accommodation and retail and industrial premises. He now has a multi million pound commercial portfolio and includes the Hilton by Hampton hotel, which is being built on his 1.5-acre site in Leeds.
Hussain has plans to have a hotel in every major city in the UK and worldwide. He says: "I was the youngest of eight and times were hard growing up. We lived in a normal terrace house and it was pretty hectic. Hussain states: "My dad died when I was 11 and it had a massive effect on my life. I guess it made me work even harder to make him proud. He was very strict and instilled a good work ethic in us all. But he was a really nice man too. That's one of the main things I've taken into business. I'm always nice. A lot of your success has to do with how you treat people. It's important that people can trust you in the business world. And I never take no for an answer. I worked with people that made a lot more money than me and when I was young, being Asian as well, some people wouldn't take me seriously, but if they don't take me seriously I cut them out."
Hussain has high hopes for Cubic and wants to create the next superbrand, like Virgin, he says. He wants to create Cubic Air, Cubic Trains, Cubic Radio, Cubic Shipping, Cubic Oil and Cubic Entertainment.
